ENTOMOLOGY EXPO
For this project, we were tasked with designing an event poster using found objects from a chosen location and incorporating them into the final piece. I envisioned an 'Entomology Expo' at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, where insect enthusiasts could come together to explore the fascinating world of these often-overlooked creatures.
I combined several mediums in my design process—layering photography, hand-drawn illustrations, and digital editing to create a rich, textured collage. Each element was carefully selected to reflect the essence of the Ecology Center, bringing together natural textures and my artistic interpretation of the environment. The grid system provided a structured base, but I intentionally broke out of it to create a dynamic and engaging layout that draws viewers in. Finding the right contrast between typography, color, and texture was key in creating a visually cohesive yet intriguing piece for the event.
Before designing the poster, I started by researching the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano to understand its mission, environment, and connection to sustainability. I wanted the Entomology Expo to feel authentic to the space, so I visited in person to immerse myself in the surroundings. Walking through the center, I observed the natural textures, colors, and intricate details of the plants, soil, and even the small critters that call it home. I took photos, sketched on-site, and gathered found objects—like dried leaves, organic materials, and fragments of printed matter—that would later serve as inspiration and elements within the composition.
Back in my workspace, I experimented with these materials by scanning them, layering them with my hand-drawn insect illustrations, and digitally manipulating them to create a rich collage. Photography played a role in capturing the raw textures of the Ecology Center, while digital editing helped refine the composition. I aimed to balance the organic and structured by using a grid system as a foundation, then strategically breaking free from it to make the poster feel immersive and alive—mirroring the complexity and movement of insects themselves.
