This project is a visual and tactile exploration of the Orange County Museum of Art, designed to capture the sensory and emotional experience of entering the museum. Rather than a traditional catalog, this book acts as an artistic interpretation, using unconventional layouts, layered imagery, and dynamic typography to evoke the feeling of moving through OCMA’s space. It reflects not just the art within the museum, but also the atmosphere, architecture, and the way visitors interact with their surroundings.
Before creating this book, I spent time immersing myself in the museum—walking through its spaces, observing how light shifts throughout the day, and noticing the way people navigate the galleries. I paid attention to the moments of stillness and movement, the contrast between open spaces and intimate corners, and the connection between the museum’s architecture and the artwork in it. These observations shaped the foundation of the book, guiding the pacing, visual rhythm, and structure of the design.Beyond observation, I documented my experience through sketches, notes, and photographs, capturing both the grand scale of the museum and the small, fleeting details that make it feel alive. I also considered the emotional response—how the museum can feel overwhelming, contemplative, or invigorating, depending on the visitor’s journey. These insights influenced my approach, leading me to experiment with layering, transparency, and unexpected page compositions to replicate the feeling of discovery and movement within OCMA.
By translating my personal experience into design, I aimed to create a book that doesn’t just describe the museum but embodies it. Each page turn reflects a shift in perspective, much like walking through an exhibition, and the mix of materials and formats encourages interaction, just as art invites engagement. The result is a book that captures the essence of OCMA—not as a static institution, but as a living, evolving space where art and experience intertwine.
