ABOUT
Phasmophobia is an experimental book I designed to explore the psychological and supernatural elements of fear. I wanted to create an immersive experience that captures the eerie, unsettling nature of paranormal encounters through experimental typography, layered textures, and dynamic layouts. By playing with distortion, transparency, and unexpected type treatments, I aimed to mirror the uncertainty and disorientation that come with the fear of ghosts. Every design choice—from the curated imagery to the restrained color palette—was intentional in building tension and unease. This project challenged traditional reading experiences, pushing the boundaries of editorial design to engage the viewer both visually and emotionally. The challenge was to limit myself with only using typographic elements within the design, which forced me to get creative when exploring the manipulation of the typography to evoke the desired emotion.
THE PROCESS
The process of creating Phasmophobia was deeply experimental, requiring multiple iterations to refine both the design and the emotional impact. I started by printing rough spreads to analyze the composition, typography, and pacing—seeing the layouts physically helped me catch inconsistencies and adjust type hierarchy, spacing, and visual flow. Through rounds of revisions, I refined the balance between text and typographic imagery, ensuring each page contributed to the eerie, unsettling atmosphere I wanted to evoke. Material choices played a crucial role in enhancing the experience; I experimented with different paper stocks, incorporating vellum to create layers of opacity and distortion, mimicking the ghostly presence that lingers between seen and unseen. The tactile qualities of the book became just as important as the visuals, drawing the reader into the unsettling nature of phasmophobia itself. Every element, from ink opacity to paper texture, was carefully considered to immerse the viewer in the fear of the unknown.
