My editorial project explores the intersection of traditional typography and modern design by applying the golden ratio to typesetting The Wizard of Oz. The intent was to honor classic book design principles while introducing contemporary visual elements to create a timeless yet refreshed interpretation of the text. The typography follows a meticulously structured layout, balancing readability and elegance, while the illustrations blend traditional and modern styles to bridge past and present. Each image has been carefully treated to align with the book’s aesthetic, with the deliberate use of red as a focal color—symbolizing Dorothy’s journey, the ruby slippers, and the story’s vibrant sense of adventure. Through this approach, the project embraces both historical craftsmanship and innovative storytelling, offering a refined yet imaginative reading experience.
THE PROCESS
The process of refining my editorial project was highly iterative, involving multiple phases of printing, analysis, and critique. I began by setting the type according to the golden ratio, carefully adjusting type size, leading, and kerning to achieve a balanced and harmonious layout. Printing out the spreads allowed me to see the typography in its physical form, revealing nuances that weren’t as apparent on-screen. I analyzed readability, spacing, and alignment, making note of any inconsistencies or areas that felt visually off.
Through rounds of critique, I received valuable feedback on both the typography and imagery, prompting revisions that refined the hierarchy, improved text flow, and ensured a seamless integration of illustrations. With each iteration, I made precise adjustments—tightening kerning, refining leading, and ensuring the red accents were impactful without overpowering the composition. This hands-on, detail-oriented process ultimately allowed me to craft a final layout that felt both intentional and dynamic while staying true to the project’s traditional foundations.
